Runny nose, itchy eyes, sneezing, watery eyes and coughing are all symptoms of allergies. As seasoned citizens of parenting town, we know well enough that certain allergies peak during the same time every year. These on and off allergies are what are called seasonal allergies which get triggered around the same time every year due to increased quantity of allergens in the surroundings. Similar is the case with seasonal winter allergies that peak around the end go the year and a month before and after.

Winter allergies are usually related caused by dust mites, moulds, insect parts in the air and furry pets like dogs and cats. Mould spores are usually high in dark damp corners of the house like the kitchen, bathrooms and store rooms. Dust mites are tiny insects that feed on shed skin and are usually found in pillows, bedding sheets, upholstered furniture and carpets etc. Insect parts are usually from small dead insects that the air has blown away and the allergies are usually due to proteins found in the parts. Similar is the case for pets where the allergy is proteins in their fur, saliva, dander etc.

Now that we know what triggers these winter allergies and bothers the little ones, lets take a look at how to care for kids and prevent exposure to the allergens to begin with.

1. Animals (Furry pets): Make sure that the pets are given a bath weekly to ensure that the allergens are washed away. Additionally, pets should be kept out of the children's room, and away from sofas and places where the kids nap. Remember to give the kids a shower once they are done playing with the pets and change their clothes. Vacuuming the carpets and keeping the upholstery clean also helps.

2. Mould spores: Mould spores can be kept at bay by ensuring a humidity level below 50% most of the time. Cleaning any stagnant water, using an exhaust fan in the kitchen and bathrooms work well. Additionally, one can use an air conditioner with a filter to ensure that there are no mould spores in the room. Getting rid of trash and cleaning old food in the refrigerators is a good move to keep the area mould free.

3. Dust Mites: These little critters flourish in warm humid climates like in India. The way to deal with these is to regularly wash the bedding in hot water and vacuum the upholstery on a regular basis. Additionally, flooring should be cleaned on a regular basis. One can even use dust proof covers to encase the pillows in the house.

Allergies on a general note can be very annoying and can spoil a child's mood faster than a Ferrari goes from 0-100 miles. So, its best to be well prepared in advance to prevent allergies by dealing with the root cause allergens. However, once allergies are triggered, the only option at hand are doctor prescribed medications suitable for your child. Learn about your child's allergies and use the information to your advantage for an allergy free winter for your kids this year.
